Ballina spreads across an island and low river flats at the mouth of the Richmond, with the red-soil Alstonville plateau rising behind it and Lennox Head on the coast to the north. Each has its own container customer. On the plateau it is macadamia and avocado growers, who store harvest bins, netting, sprays and machinery parts in a used cargo-worthy 20ft or 40ft. Down on the flats around Wardell it is cane farms. Much of Ballina is only a little above sea level, and the 2022 floods reached places that had never been wet before. A common question is whether a container is flood storage. The straight answer is no. A cargo-worthy container is sold wind and watertight, which means rain and wind-driven spray stay out. Standing water will come in under and around the doors, and a container that is empty or lightly loaded can float and drift.
